C. had been a president since immemorial times, the young man remembered. He had been born during C.'s reign, had loved during C.'s reign, had gone into college and out of college, married and had a child, all under the government of C. and his Communist party.
Seeing a queue, the young man would join it, asking timidly what it was that they were selling today. Sometimes it was milk, at other times bread - if you got lucky, there was pork. If you got both lucky and unlucky, it was pork with tons of soy, which wasn't what you were paying for, but you didn't complain, since you got something and that was better than nothing.
